A drum solo, filmed in a single take using motion control technology click images above for slideshow Automaton was filmed using a motion control rig, which at the time was mostly used for compositing and special effects in film and television. Though barely glimpsed in the final film, the machine here assumes a performing role as it tracks around the chromed curves of a drum-kit, accompanying improvising percussionist Steve Noble as he plays a mesmerising solo. The last frame of the film exactly matches the first, allowing for seamless looping. Partly inspired by Boccioni's 1913, Development of a Bottle in Space and Orson Welles Touch of Evil, Automaton was commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and first exhibited at Tate Britain in 'Single Shot' in 2006.
