Much of the work in PLUNK, BOUM, KRASH, ZZZT draws attention to the interconnections between sound and sculpture. The word ‘volume’ can refer to mass and space as well as to sound or changes in air pressure. Materials such as iron, copper, quartz and stone have both sculptural and electromagnetic qualities and these materials often make up the technology that mediates and moulds the everyday sounds that we hear. The works in the upper gallery operate collectively as an audio-visual sound-system. Some of the sounds in the space manifest ultrasonically, some are only experienced haptically (via touch), other sounds are made visible by the indexical movement of light, or experienced through the imagination. The lower gallery featured archival works and a program of historical single-screen works in film, video and animation. These short moving-image works were made by the artist between 1988-2012 and explore themes of performativity. A printed tracklist was given away for free at the exhibition.
