'In 1994 in Dusseldorf, I saw a one ofJames Turrell's perceptual cells. Inside a free standing cubicle, a small dome is illuminated by an adjustable, coloured strobe light. Certain frequencies of flashing light can produce visual hallucinations (Brion Gysinand Ian Somerville explored this in the 1960’s with their ‘Dream Machines’). Inside Turrell’s work I experienced a visual hallucination of a vertiginous and plunging view of a cityscape with ant-like figures bustling about. Then fluorescent coloured plastic cutlery began to float across the scene. I reconstructed the experience in Amsterdam, using footage I shot from a huge Ferris wheel.'
