Death Magazine 52 - Live at Duma Express, Birmingham 1983
Between 1982-84, Death Magazine 52 had a floating membership, making live
performances and recording using tapes, electronics, percussion and super-8 films.
The noisy and physical performances often provokedextreme audience reactions.

Death Magazine 52 were the 'mystery guest band' at the Equinox Event, a festival of noise music at the London Musicians Collective, Camden in 1983. The chaotic day-long event was dogged by violence and complaints about noise from local residents. There were several changes to the planned line up and things got fractious as the day went on. A fight broke out when Death Magazine 52 took to the stage and their performace was cut short by a police raid shortly after. An archival recording of the raid is included on the D.Mag 52 vinyl release on Harbinger Sound2012.

These recordings capture the core group and its floating membership at various stages of their existence. Recordings from the studio sessions and live sets, including playing to a a school hall full of teenage girls at 3pm one afternoon. They were the final, mystery band to play at the legendary Equinox Event at the London Musicians Collective in 1983, on the night their performance was halted by a Police raid, which closed down the event.
The recordings are raw in nature and should be considered as historical documentation.
The Curfew Recordings were made at a disused industrial site on the river Tyne in
1984 and feature John Smith (then publisher of Interchange magazine), Sean Dower
(ex Death Magazine 52 & later of Bow Gamelan Ensemble) and John Mylotte (of the
band Metgumnebone).
The recordings were made inside a steel-plated silo (approx 10m tall and 18m wide)
once used for bitumen storage. The instrumentation is acoustic and the recording are
unprocessed (the space however adds a remarkable reverb).
Instrumentation included: bull roarers, spirit whistles, human thy-bone trumpet,
chimes, pipes, gongs, flutes, drums, projectiles, scraped and bowed objects and other
materials like glass, metal, bones and wood.
This is the first digital transfer of the original tapes to become available.

Left: Vizualiser video #3 is auto-generated using the Tech RTA live visual plugin, which translates sound into a multi-channel sound level meter. The original soundtrack was made in 1996 using the OMS test facility with Quicktime instruments. Each mouse click triggers a random permutation of notes and sounds from a total of 128 possible instruments and percussion. The player can only affect the rest between notes and the sustain (by keeping the mouse button depressed).
